Theme Camps

Theme Camps are interactive, living art projects where a group of people collaborate to gift experiences, performances, services, resources, or anything else they can conceive.   They embody  gifting and interactive art, two of the key Burning Man experiences.

The only boundaries of  a Theme Camp are your imagination and desire.  Theme Camps have gifted food, libations, music, and massage, while others have simply created welcoming spaces for people to gather, interact, or even grab a much needed nap.  But a Theme Camp does not have to be limited to the borders of its camping area, a Theme Camp can be a group of performers that roam the event together giving rouge performances or evening coaxing participants back to their camp.

If you are inspired to invite people into your space, create an interactive environment, or offer special services and would like to be mentioned on this website and have space reserved in our Theme Camp area, you can register your theme camp by contacting themecamps@burntoranges.org.

Volunteering

Confused? Lost? Don't know exactly what these freaks are up to? VOLUNTEER! It's the easiest way to get involved with things and meet people. And it's a ton of fun! Our event is a place where work and play are kinda the same thing, so jump in with both feet and have a blast!

We need volunteers before, during, and after the event.  Volunteers are needed to get the site ready, keep the event running, and clean the site up.  So whatever your availability and whatever your contribution, we need you!

If you would like to volunteer in one or more of the following areas, please visit the spreadsheet to sign up for Volunteer shifts during the Event or contact volunteer@burntoranges.org to sign up for Pre or Post event positions.

  1. Pre-event organization & Work weekends

  2. Event Positions include Greeters, AfterBurn Medical Posse (AMPs), & AfterBurn Safety Squadron (ASS) Team.

  3. Post-event Leave No Trace.

During Event Volunteering Opportunities

Gate Greeters – Volunteer greeters welcome other participants to AfterBurn and make sure they are prepared for the event. It's usually a big party at the greeter station. Read the Greeter Training Guide and Greeter Cheat Sheet to get an idea of what is involved.

AfterBurn Safety Squadron (ASS) Team – Have you kissed an ASS today? Our ASS team is dedicated to the overall safety of the land and participants. Basically the ASS Team will:

  • Be responsible for being first responders to any conflicts or emergencies. So, if you've attended an event like ours before, or are familiar with what BRC Rangers do, jump onboard our ASS Team.

  • Make sure everyone at the event has on a wrist band.

The ASS Team is one of the most important aspects of the event, and offer a great sense of reward for your time. If you have questions about the ASS Team, what they do, or want to volunteer to be an ASS Team member, contact Mayhem & Sassy: tampamayhem@yahoo.com.

AfterBurn Medical Posse (AMP) – We are looking for EMTs, nurses, doctors, or First Aid certified individuals to volunteer as an AMP. As first responders at our event you will treat minor injuries and, if necessary, work with our ASS Team to utilize the 911 system to evacuate a participant with a potentially life-threatening injury.

Guardians of the Loo (GLOO) & Earth Guardians - Two of our more sacred volunteer groups.  These volunteers protect both the life of the event and the planet by making sure the grounds and the potties are MOOP free.  Want to help AfterBurn be a sustainable event?  Be a GLOO or Earth Guardian and help spread the word about Leave No Trace (LNT) practices to all the lovely participants at AfterBurn. This is an easy task. All you need to do is take a garbage bag and walk the event site, picking up Matter Out Of Place (MOOP) as you see it and remind participants to do the same! You also get to meet fabulous people and look at all the great stuff out there! For extra fun, get a friend to join you!

Parking Guides & Camp Placers – These volunteers are integral to the community planning of AfterBurn. They will liaison with Greeters to direct our AfterBurner participants to their camping spot or theme camp, and show them where to park their cars for the duration of the event.

Art

Artists and performers of all types are welcome and encouraged to participate.  PreHeat is a great place for experimentation since your audience is comprised of creative people who appreciate the creative effort as much as, and sometimes more than, the finished product.

If you are planning on bringing large scale art please register in advance so we can set aside space.  Click here to register art.
